Happy Memorial Day to everyone!

Today I am going to enjoy my family and freedom!!!  I’ll be running in the Cotton Row 10K bright and early.  I’m ready to go with my funny red socks for the race.  From what I’ve heard it’s quite inspiring and exciting with everyone sporting their red, white and blue spirit!  :)

What will you be doing to celebrate this special day?  Share in the comment section.

My Toaster Died

Where To Recycle Weird Items Like Toasters

toasterThe other day our toaster kicked the bucket; no amount of shaking or fork-poking could revive it. There was a time my lifeless gadgets would be on a one-way trip to a landfill without a second thought. But these days all it takes is a quick internet search to find a near-by recycling center that accepts small appliances like my poor broken toaster.

Earth911.com is my go-to for recycling center searches. Their page features an easy-to-use search box, just type in what you’re recycling and your zip code. “Toaster” and “35757″ turns up the Technology Recycling Center, on Madison Boulevard in Madison, Alabama. Earth911.com also provides all the important information - what’s recycled there (most electronics), any fees involved (free drop offs for everything except a $7 fee for CRT Monitors and Televisions), and the contact info (256-464-7985).

The next day running errands I made a quick stop at the Technology Recycling Center and dropped off my toaster and an old computer monitor that had been parked in the basement forever. The staff was quick, friendly, and helpful, unloading the giant old-school monitor for me. In the meantime, we needed a new toaster. Instead of searching for the cheapest appliance, or throwaway gadgets that won’t last (like my last one), I went for a moderately priced model that boasted lots of good reviews online. Hopefully, investing in a bit pricier model will result in durability and less waste in the long run.

Farmer’s Markets This Saturday!

Humble Heart Farms

Get ready for Thanksgiving at your local farmer’s market!

This Saturday the folks at Humble Heart Farms in Elkmont, Alabama, are opening up the farm for visitors!  We went last Saturday and got to play with a baby goat, sample some out of this world goat cheese (my favs – Hickory, Garlic & More, and Honey), and even taste-test goat meat.  Also on hand was Miles Albright of the 2733 Ranch in Huntsville, Alabama.  We tried some of the ranch’s grass-fed, all natural beef and it was simply delicious.  Expect friendly faces, great conversations, and some fantastic recipe tips.  Humble Heart also offers tours of the farm and dairy.  For more details on this Saturday’s event, November the 21st, click here.

Also on Saturday the 21st, the 3rd annual Harvest Market Day will be getting underway in Madison, Alabama from 9am to 1pm.  The event will feature the best in-season local produce just in time for Thanksgiving.  For details on the Madison City Farmer’s Market click here.
